"You can be anything you want to be, if you just try hard enough"

To prepare for the exam, firstly, we should need to analyze from the previous year's cutoff of GATE BT that how many marks should need to qualify for the GATE exam.
We know that Gate cutoff marks mainly depend on;
- The number of candidates appeared in the discipline of exam-between 10,000 to 15000 Approximately.
- Difficulty of exam
- Average marks of toppers-between 70-80 out of 100
- Also, it depends on the seat matrix in the Institutes.
YEAR | Qualifying marks (UR) | Qualifying mark (OBC-NCL) | Qualifying marks (SC/ST/PWD) |
2021 | 30.00 | 27.00 | 20.00 |
2020 | 30.70 | 27.60 | 20.40 |
2019 | 35.90 | 32.30 | 23.90 |
2018 | 27.90 | 25.10 | 18.50 |
2017 | 38.90 | 35.00 | 25.90 |
2016 | 26.08 | 23.47 | 17.39 |
2015 | 26.00 | 23.50 | 17.40 |
2014 | 25.84 | 23.26 | 17.23 |
2013 | 38.77 | 37.89 | 25.85 |
Let's discuss the strategy that how can we qualify the cutoff marks;
STRATEGY 1 :
As per the GATE syllabus, we know that general aptitude and mathematics weightage is 30% of the total marks, and 70% weightage is for core subjects. If we score from general aptitude and mathematics plus some score from core subjects we can clear the cutoff of GATE Biotechnology.
The advantage of this strategy is that we can clear the cutoff regardless of deep knowledge in core subjects. The disadvantage of this strategy is that questions are tricky and the chance of getting negative marks should be high.
This strategy is only recommended for those who are good in both general aptitude and engineering Mathematics. To prepare engineering mathematics click here
STRATEGY 2 :
Preparation from previous year question papers(PYQs) of GATE BT, DBT, CSIR, JNU and also give some mock tests or test series. While doing PYQs, always remember these three points
- Always start with questions in which we are 100% sure to be correct. It will give the confidence to solve the question that is not sure it will be right or wrong.
- There will be a question in which we are double-minded (mainly between two options). In these types of questions, clear the concept and confusion about the topic. It is recommended that make notes of your mistake and revise it.
- Clear the concept of unknown questions from standard books. For further details click here.
STRATEGY 3 :
As we know from the syllabus, 70% weightage is for core subjects, and candidates who have deep knowledge about their subjects can easily clear the minimum cutoff marks. The analyzed approximate marks of subjects from Previous year question papers are provided below:
- Bioprocess Engineering/ industrial Biotechnology - 14
- Recombinant DNA technology/ plant biotechnology/ animal biotechnology -13
- Molecular biology -8
- Immunology -9
- Enzyme engineering-8
- for Other subjects- 3 or 4
From these proven strategies, we can easily clear the cutoff of the GATE exam, But only qualifying exams don't promise seats at IITs and NITs. If we score 45+ marks out of 100 in GATE biotechnology, we can get a seat in IITs. Always aim for high for getting admission in top institutes in India as well as abroad.
