How to prepare Engineering Mathematics for GATE Biotechnology (GATE BT) - PART 1

Engineering mathematics is for 10-15 marks in GATE paper and these marks are valuable to crack GATE Biotechnology exam. Start practicing mathematics at least 4-5 months before the exam date. 30% marks are very very important to decide your rank and score including general aptitude and mathematics. You can think that you can easily score in subject questions, but questions can be unexpected and there are always few NAT questions which are confusing. So you have to prepare both very well (GA+ mathematics and subject).

First, you have to prepare from the syllabus and then you have to analyze the previous year's question paper. So, let's start with the syllabus of Engineering mathematics.

SYLLABUS

  • Linear Algebra: Matrices and determinants; Systems of linear equations; Eigen values and Eigen vectors.
  • Calculus: Limits, continuity and differentiability; Partial derivatives, maxima, and minima; Sequences and series; Test for convergence.
  • Differential Equations: Linear and nonlinear first-order ODEs, higher-order ODEs with constant coefficients; Cauchy’s and Euler’s equations; Laplace transforms.
  • Probability and Statistics: Mean, median, mode, and standard deviation; Random variables; Poisson, normal and binomial distributions; Correlation and regression analysis.
  • Numerical Methods: Solution of linear and nonlinear algebraic equations; Integration by trapezoidal and Simpson’s rule; Single-step method for differential equations.

There are books for preparing mathematics and general aptitude; preferably Wileys Mathematics For GATE and GK Publication Guide Mathematics.

 LINEAR ALGEBRA

If you analyze from previous year question papers, you can get an idea of the most important questions such as;

  • Property-based Question- types of matrix, types of solution.
  • Fundamentals of Matrix- multiplication, addition, subtraction of matrix.

The first three points are most important. If you practice, you can score easily in linear algebra. The Questions will be easy compared to other topics. Only thing you have to do is practice previous year question papers and understand where you required attention.

Prefer this book for Linear Algebra – Advanced Engineering Mathematics – Erwin Kreyszig.

CALCULUS

If you analyze from previous year question papers, you can get an idea of the most important questions such as;
  • To find the value of an integral
  • To find the limit of an function
  • To predict if series is converging or diverging
  • Partial derivative question
  • Maxima and minima conceptual question (if paper is tough)
For further study preferred book for calculus is Intermediate Mathematics by B. B. Sastry and K. Venkateswarlu.
